RESCUE by Marvin Berenson Rescue, set in 2011, tells the story of a courageous woman who devotes her life fighting the forces that promote global warming and worldwide pollution. The environmental predictions for the next 100 years are truly alarming. The evidence in the story is based on extensive scientific work conducted by prominent scientists. Unless a drastic change in our energy policies is set in motion in the very near future, catastrophe awaits us. Sharleen Bradley, a brilliant, 36-year-old lawyer, is dedicated to awakening the population to the widespread and increasing dangers to our environment. Supported, initially, by a small group of people, she becomes a leader in the fight against pollution and establishes an organization, the Rescue Project, to help diminish and even eradicate the immense dangers to our environment. Her objective is to rescue the world from the hands of those who foster, wittingly or unwittingly, the demise of the earth as we now know it. Growing alienation from Charles, her husband, leads Sharleen to a tumultuous affair that threatens her stability and ability to pursue her dream of protecting the earth and revitalizing our planet. Despite misgivings, she leaves Charles and discovers that she has become the de facto slave of her lover, Cliff Westerman, a wealthy businessman. As her organization grows, Cliff arbitrarily takes over its leadership preventing Sharleen from guiding it. A major struggle ensues between them. Too late, she discovers that he has a background of violence, abuse and paranoia. Meanwhile, Sharleen and her husband reconcile and realize a newfound love. Cliff discovers that Sharleen and Charles have resumed their relationship and accuses her of infidelity. Increasing jealousy thrusts Cliff into a period of emotional turmoil and paranoia. An overwhelming fear grips Sharleen as Cliff threatens to kill both Charles and herself. The story rises to a climatic conclusion as Cliff’s paranoia plays out. |
