About Dr. Berenson
Marvin Berenson, M.D. recently retired, has worked over fifty years as a psychiatrist and Clinical Professor of Psychiatry at the USC Keck School of Medicine. During those years he marveled at the changes many of his patients made in their lives. They constantly sought new paths and new ways of fulfillment. Learning to know themselves, they overcame adversity and strove for transformation, peacefulness and a creative lifestyle. They became true lovers of life. He has translated their inspiring stories into his nonfiction books
A strong believer in creativity and self-discovery, Dr. Berenson has devoted many years to sculpting, painting, composing music and most recently to writing. The emphasis that he has always placed on creativity, freedom, self-direction and love is clearly seen in his lifestyle. All of Dr. Berenson’s ideas, beliefs, and philosophy of life are in his books. There you will discover the intrinsic power inherent in all of us to overcome obstacles and deficiencies. Dr. Berenson is Clinical Professor Emeritus of Psychiatry at the USC Keck School of Medicine and has been a Training and Supervising Analyst with the Los Angeles Society and Institute of Psychoanalysis. He is a member of the American Psychiatric Association, the American Psychoanalytic Association, the International Psychoanalytic Association, and the Alpha Omega Alpha Honorary Medical Society.
He lives with his wife, Irene, in Palos Verdes Estates, California. Together they share the love and friendship of six children and eleven grandchildren. Among his many interests are writing, painting, sculpting, composing, gardening, hiking, reading, movies, playing the synthesizer and drums and play-acting.

From years of self-discovery I finally found my path in life. My dream was to encapsulate life in a creative lifestyle that involved relationships, art, self growth, spirituality and connecting with nature. My success was not necessarily assured but I always overcame doubt and forged ahead seeking new venues, reaching new goals and finding greater inner freedom. It has taken a lifetime to arrive where I am today and yet I’m not where I want to be. I often wonder if I will know when I actually reach that elusive goal. Even as I approach a goal, new ones appear. The structure of my life continues to evolve and I have come to know that change is the essence of living creatively. I will never reach my goal because my goal is change.
Over four years ago, I moved to Palos Verdes and married Irene, the woman of my dreams. Living in Palos Verdes brought a new peacefulness to my life. I found an even closer connection with nature in this quiet and beautiful peninsula. I watch magical sunsets or walk along the cliffs. I breathe in a continual display of nature’s bounty. I also enjoy just sitting quietly in the peacefulness of our home where Irene and I discuss books, music, movies, travel, the environment, politics or the activities of our family or friends. I talk of love, spirituality, hope and not letting barriers impede our continuing search.
I firmly believe that each of us can reach a more fulfilling life. Whenever you start you can refashion your life over and over. Now is the time to do everything possible to come to know yourself and truly live the life you seek. Overcoming obstacles to such self-realization is essential to accomplish much and to eventually realize your dreams.
